LAWS, ETHICS & NEWS LITERACY
Laws and ethics exist in journalism. My time on The Muse gave me a glimpse into the real world that was much different from any encounter I've faced. Through my work as a web editor, I've matured in my understanding of the law and ethics. I strive to ensure that these are upheld by not only myself but others as well. As web managing editor, I share this knowledge with the staff to inform them about laws and ethics to ensure they are also responsibly reporting ethical journalism.

Copyright Removal
Prior to me joining The Muse, there had been issues with copyrighted material on past stories. To resolve this, I went into the long, multi-paged list of published content and removed every story that had a copyrighted image or any image that could pose an issue in the future. I went from 2014-2021, removing a large handful of those stories, even apparent spam stories that were sent as requests to be published. I did this in the span of only 2 days (3 hours spent on the first day and 10 on the second) and trudged through with this tedious task to make sure we wouldn't have another story with copyrighted content was not on our website.

Teaching Copyright
My prior experiences dealing with copyright taught me the importance of knowing our rights as student journalists and journalistic law and ethics so we can responsibly exercise said rights. Thus, I made sure to teach others copyright thoroughly with an interactive and thought-out lesson. I used scenarios and shared my personal experiences with copyright to make sure staffers absorbed the lesson and truly understood how important it was to know our press laws so that we can avoid future incidents and be ethical journalists.
